Join an open data project for real-time monitoring of grid frequency and voltage quality across Europe.
What is PQopen?
PQopen is an open data initiative building a distributed, cross-border monitoring system for the European electricity grid. The focus is on long-term, high-resolution measurements of grid frequency as well as power quality using affordable, open hardware devices.
- High-resolution data (cycle-by-cycle frequency and voltage rms)
- Fully open-source: hardware, software & data
- Ideal for research, education, and public interest
- Built for resilience and scientific collaboration
How You Can Participate
Hosting a PQopen device is easy — and makes a real contribution to transparent energy monitoring.
Here’s how it works:
- Receive a pre-configured PQopen measurement device after positive evaluation of your application.
- Install the device in your switchboard and connect it to your Wi-Fi.
- The device securely uploads anonymized data to the PQopen server.
- You can access your local data via private dashboard access.
What you need:
- Grid connection (preferrabley 3-phase) and stable Wi-Fi
- Willingness and ability to install and occasionally check the device
- (Optional) Small DC-UPS for power outages
What you get:
- Access to your own local power quality data
- Contribution to an open pan-European dataset
- Optional private monitoring of current and power (data not published)
Technical Highlights
- Frequency: Cycle-by-cycle values
- Voltage: Cycle-by-Cycle RMS for one phase, RMS, THD, Flicker (1-min and 10-min aggregates)
- Optional: Current and power (local access only, not published)
- No personal data is collected – VPN-secured connection
- Compatible with DC-UPS for blackout resilience
